Messi rescues Barca with late winner at Osasuna

MADRID (Reuters) - Leaders Barcelona needed two goals in the last ten minutes to beat bottom club Osasuna 3-2 away, and moved 12 points clear at the top of the Primera Liga on Sunday.

Xavi''s brave strike in the 80th minute levelled the scores at 2-2 and Lionel Messi cut in from the right flank to bury a shot in the far corner four minutes later.

Barca move on to 47 points from 18 games extending their lead over second place, which is now occupied by improving champions Real Madrid, who beat Real Mallorca 3-0 away.

Sevilla also have 35 points but are third on goal difference after their 3-1 comeback win at Deportivo Coruna on Saturday.

Messi set up Samuel Eto''o for his 16th goal of the campaign just before the break in a frozen Pamplona, but Osasuna bit back in the second half.

Del Piero stunner helps Juve close in on Inter

AFP-Alessandro Del Piero scored a stunning free-kick to hand Juventus a 1-0 home win over Siena at Turin''s Olympic stadium on Sunday and close the gap at the top behind leaders Inter Milan to four points.

Inter left the door open with a surprise 1-1 home draw against Cagliari on Saturday night and Del Piero''s sixth goal of the season direct from a free-kick allowed the Old Lady of Turin to take full advantage.

Despite his advancing years, the 34-year-old Del Piero seems to be getting better and better.

This was his seventh league goal of the season and 12th in all competitions, but most remarkable has been his free-kick record.

Previous successful dead-ball strikes helped Juve beat Real Madrid home and away in the Champions League while another downed Zenit St Petersburg 1-0 in Turin.

And in the league he has been equally deadly, previously hitting the back of the net against Palermo and Chievo.

AFP-Real Madrid captain Raul celebrated his 500th league appearance in the famous white shirt with a goal as the champions climbed to second with a comfortable 3-0 win at Real Mallorca on Sunday.

Incredibly it was Real''s first away win in the league since October 18 and the capital giants are now nine points behind tabletoppers Barcelona who have a game in hand.

Arjen Robben opened the scoring as early as the third minute before Raul, 31, struck on 17 minutes with his seventh goal of the campaign and Sergio Ramos netted a third in the second half.

Real legend Raul now stands sixth in the Spanish league appearance standings just 24 matches from equalling the club record held by Manuel Sanchis.

Former Barcelona goalkeeper Andoni Zubizarreta holds the all-time appearance record with 622 league outings.

While Real had a great day at the office Atletico Madrid lost 3-2 at home to struggling Athletic Bilbao to increase the calls for coach Javier Aguirre''s head.

Bilbao came from a goal down to stun Atletico whose misery was summed up when Maniche was sent off for a second yellow card in the closing stages.

Defeat was cruel on Spurs, who had to play the closing stages with goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes unable to move freely because of a leg injury after using all their substitutes, and left the visitors in the bottom three.

It looked as if the Londoners, with Jermain Defoe making his second debut for the club after re-joining Spurs from Portsmouth, would salvage a draw.

But with Gomes rooted to his line, unmarked Honduran left-back Figueroa headed in powerfully from a Ryan Taylor corner in the 91st minute to score his first goal for north-west side Wigan.

This win meant Wigan had taken 18 points out of a possible 21 from their last seven league matches.

Spurs had the better of what chances there were in a goalless first-half although it was Wigan who finished the opening period the stronger and Gomes had to smother a close-range effort from Emile Heskey in the 39th minute.

Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti said on Saturday that Beckham would almost certainly be on the bench but has opted to give the England international a start on the right of a midfield three.

Japan trio banned from "coming of age" ceremony

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan coach Takeshi Okada has issued a bizarre ban on three of his players from attending their "coming-of-age" ceremony on Monday.

Okada refused to release the trio from training for the traditional ceremony for those who have reached 20 -- the mark of adulthood in Japan and a day observed with a national holiday.

"There''s no need for them to go to a coming of age ceremony," Okada told reporters. "I''m not going either."

Cerezo Osaka midfielder Takashi Inui, his club team mate Shinji Kagawa and Oita Trinita midfielder Mu Kanazaki have all been told they cannot leave Japan''s training camp in Kyushu.

Twenty is also the legal age for drinking in Japan, a fact that will not be lost on Okada after several embarrassing drink-related incidents involving Japanese players in recent years.

"Football is more important," said Inui after hearing he would not get the chance to dress up. "I want to get as much as I can out of this camp."

Japan open their Asian Cup qualifying campaign with a home game against Yemen on Jan. 20 before playing Bahrain away eight days later.

They then play Finland on Feb. 4 before taking on Australia at home in a 2010 World Cup qualifier on Feb. 11.

The top two from each of the two five-team groups will qualify automatically from Asia for the 2010 World Cup finals in South Africa.
